Harper swore he may need to just forget all about the day’s events. It seemed so surreal now. It was amazing that he was just sitting here, so average, so normal. But he knew those things that he had seen earlier in the day had happened. He felt his throat clog while his eye burned with unshed tears. He took another swig of the ginger ale when he felt his stomach give painful protests to his emotions. As soon as he placed the half empty glass down, Harper’s attention was brought to the female sliding beside him. He blinked, slow to react. But then the blond gave a small laugh at her choice of words.

       “Just…a bad day.”

Alright, so laughter was a good thing. Colette smiled at his chuckle. Would chattering help him or just taking his mind off whatever bothered him? She didn’t know him well enough to really tell, so going by ear would have to do. Getting those tears away from him would be of top priority. She propped herself up against a door frame, looking up at the blonde. Thinking of ways to cheer up strangers was the second hardest thing in the world, next to getting her dad to ease off the alcohol on a Friday night. She nodded briefly, a slight oh of understanding slipping through her lips.

“Shit,” Harper felt the curse come from his mouth. He couldn’t eat. He absolutely couldn’t eat. The events from earlier in the day had left him shaken. Forget about getting into a kitchen, Harper felt like he was ready to break any second. The nose of the club he had slipped in did nothing to stop his racing thoughts. He didn’t dare be alone. But he didn’t want to be with any of his friends or family either. They would know something was up. Harper ran a hand through his hair. “Shit!”

He didn’t look happy. Of course, she was a master at stating the obvious. The reason behind his upset was something more of a mystery. Colette watched the stranger, leaning on her forearms. Pretty common cussword. Either he did something bad or someone did something bad to him. The whispers of Latin being spoken around her faded as curiosity built. Prank or family issue? Did he break something? No way to find out except to ask. Colette slipped out of the circle – wasn’t hard to do, most of them had their heads nose-deep into an English-to-Latin dictionary – in order to slide in next to the blonde stranger.
